- Hyperfine studies of point defects
in intermetallic
compounds, Gary S. Collins (invited). Abstract:
Many
intermetallic phases enjoy wide ranges of composition because of
the screening out of coulomb interactions by conduction electrons. For
example,
NiAl retains the B2 (CsCl) structure between 45 and 65 at.% Ni.
Deviations
from stoichiometry are accomodated by structural defects such as
antisite
atoms and lattice vacancies. Additional point defects may be
present
at high temperature or in non-equilibrated samples, but only in
combinations
that preserve the average composition of the phase. In this
laboratory,
we have been applying perturbed angular correlation of gamma rays (PAC)
and Mössbauer effect to detect point defects via their hyperfine
interactions,
to measure properties such as formation and migration energies, and to
study defect-defect interactions. Signals from different
defects
in the atomic shells closest to probe atoms are well resolved, removing
ambiguity in the interpretation of measurement. The paper will
present
a brief overview of this work and illustrations from recent studies.
